Obituary of Annie Cleggett
Annie Ray Cleggett was born on September 4th in Nashville, Tennessee to Daniel Harper and Margaret (Hendricks) Harper. She was the second child and first daughter to a wonderful group of six siblings. She transitioned from this earthly life to eternal life on October 7, 2023.
Annie was baptized at an early age and joined Fairfield Baptist Church under Reverend Harris.
She was always very active in the South Nashville community and had a strong work ethic. Through the years she worked at Dr. Holiday's Drugstore & Variety Shoppe and also at the original Stahlman Building located in downtown Nashville. However, her favorite role was keeping a watchful eye on her cherished siblings, Dorris, Bettie, John, Marjorie, and Thomas.
Annie was a proud graduate of Pearl High School and went on to attend Central State College in Wilberforce, Ohio to study Psychology.
On December 26, 1959, Annie married the love of her life, James Cleggett, Jr. From this union there children were born, Angela, Peter, and Michelle Cleggett.
The constantly romantic and stylish couple were blessed with forty-four years of marriage and celebrated their lives together. Ann and James enjoyed family life and were amazing, protective parents. Once the children were "good and grown" they enjoyed travelling throughout the US and were frequent followers of the TSU Football Team.
Annie had a lively spirit and was very active in her community with social clubs. She was a founding member of the 12 Links Social Club and also a member of the Red Hat Society, Queen Bee Chapter.
In continuation of her sales career, Annie worked as an Assistant Manager at Catherine's Shoppe for Women for over 15 years. Her natural affinity to style and fashion made her a top performer year after year. She was their best sales person and also their best customer.
Annie was a fabulous cook and baker and specialized in Southern cuisine. Her family was treated to delicious home-cooked dinners every night. Annie especially liked preparing large holiday meals and would begin planning her menu weeks in advance for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Annie was extremely gifted in producing flavorful food, scrumptious desserts, and thirst quenching sweet tea.
In her spare time, Annie would relax while watching television. She delighted in watching soap operas as well as police and crime dramas. Her favorite"shows" were The Young & The Restless, Law & Order, and Dateline. Annie also enjoyed watching movies of all genres. Her favorite star was Denzel Washington.
Annie had many titles in her lifetime: daughter, sibling, wife, mother, her favorite title however, was that of "Granny". A whole new portal of love opened in Annie's heart when her grandson, Peter Anthony Cleggett, Jr. was born. Annie loved and doted on Peter Jr. and treasured all the time she spent with him. She enjoyed watching him play with his action figures and running in the backyard. She was especially amused when he would try to sneak a sip of her coffee. Annie was always happy to spend time with "her Junior".
Annie was a wonderful and giving person. She was a constant source of love, guidance, and support to her entire family. She would often say, If I have it, you have it". Her support and devotion did not wane as her family grew older. She was always available to her family and was very protective and ready to help. Annie gave the right amount of love and discipline to prepare her children for the harsh, outside world. She along with her husband James, provided a safe and loving home and made sure their children were protected and educated. Annie was smart and beautiful, stylish and elegant, loved and cherished.
