Obituary of Helena Merritt
Helena was born on December 23rd, 1932, the youngest child born to Alvester and Novella Merritt. She entered eternity with the Lord on March 16, 2023.
Helena attended Pearl Elementary School, Washington Jr. High, and Pearl High School. She attended Tennessee State University majoring in Elementary Education and received a B.S. degree and Masters + 30. She also attended Chicago Teachers College while living in Chicago, Illinois.
Helena was employed by the Nashville Metropolitan Public Schools. She was a denoted and loved teacher. She taught in the primary grade, mostly first grade, she always thought they were so challenging. She taught school for 31 years. After her retirement she worked for the “Senior Citizen Organization” and Opryland.
She was a member of the Pleasant Green Missionary Church for many years. She was a member of the Metropolitan Retirement Association, Ladies Aid Society, “Senior Club” Ultimate and Social. Club. She served as secretary of the club.
Helena was loved by her friends. She always felt that her friends were her family. If they ever needed her, she always tried to be there for them. Helena was so thankful that her dear friends shared their children with her; their children became her children. When she was ill for a long length of time thru God, all her blessings flowed her way. Her friends took care of everything she needed. Her friends showed and shared their Christian belief, love, care, time, food, visitations, and daily phone calls. She was very dedicated to her family and friends.
After the death of her mother, she was the only and last Merritt left. She had no relatives living in Nashville, Tennessee but with the Grace of God, she was granted a larger family through the love of her friends. Helena was a vibrant, fun-loving, happy person. She loved to travel and took the opportunity to travel to all the places she always wanted to go. It was part of her ministry to send cards, notes, or call to church members, her family, friends, and acquaintances.
Helena is survived by her nieces, Harriett Cross and Dolores Cross and other beloved relatives and denoted friends.
Please keep the Merritt family in your thoughts and prayers.
