I am so saddened to learn of this loss. Edna and I were colleagues at TSU in the 1970’s in the Department of Psychology. We shared our interest in Psychology, and our young children at the time. I admired her breadth of knowledge, her warmth, and her zest for life.

I was deeply saddened to hear of Dr. Lockert's passing and wanted to convey my sincere condolences to her family. I had the great privilege to know Dr. Lockert as a colleague and inspiration at Meharry Medical College. She was such as presence on campus, supporting the students, serving her patients, and sharing her insights and expertise. She was sometimes underestimated by students and others who just saw a soft-spoken, dignified older woman, but that impression couldn't last long in the face of her passion for helping people when they were most vulnerable and suffering. She was the force behind Meharry students doing extremely well on the Behavioral Science section of the USMLE Step exams for many years and there are thousands of physicians who are better able to care for the whole patient because of her teaching. Her impact will live on through all of us who were touched by knowing and learning from her.

Dr. Edna Lockert was so much more than my Psychology teacher at Meharry. She was my Friend. She was a mentor, and pioneer, paving the way for so many psychologists, psychiatrists, and other women working with the mentally ill. She was someone who I always looked up to, as she was my dear friend Cheryl's mother, therefore a mother figure to me and my children. Dr. Lockert was always so gracious and kind. I spent many Thanksgivings in her home eating her delicious homemade preparations. Each time I eat blackberry cobbler, I think of how no one can beat Dr. Lockert's.
Huge thank you to Cheryl and Dan for taking such great care of my Friend, Dr. Edna Lockert in her final days.
