Dearest Denise, Michael, Jerrel and Jeremy- as you know your father and grandfather was a truly exceptional man. In addition to his most distinguished biography, I had the pleasure to first meet Mr. Meekins ~40 years ago when I was all of 8 years old. He and our beloved, Mrs Meekins were long time dear and true friends to my grandparents dating back to the 1960's. Mr. Meekins was the embodiment of what it is to be kind, patient, loyal and steadfast. I got to observe his devotion and support of Mrs. Meekins for many years while also role modeling what it was to be a loving father, father-in-law and grandfather. What I also witnessed first hand mostly was his genuine affection and friendship to my grandparents. When I was a young girl, I learned to play golf under the long- time tutelage of Mrs. Meekins. On many weekends, Mr. Meekins and my grandfather would selflessly drive me to play in golf tournaments ( on the PGA Tri- State Jr. Tour)- most of which required long commute times. They were always there- together, cheering me on and supporting my efforts in what was and remains a daunting sport- especially for children of color who were few and far between at that time. In the early 1990's, when my grandfather was diagnosed with cancer, it was Mr. Meekins who provided support, care and comfort that only a devoted friend could. Mr. Meekins dedication was always apparent and appreciated. One of my fondest memories was when he and my grandfather drove me to college for the start of my sophomore year. It was one week before my grandfathers surgery when all of our lives were forever changed. After the surgery, Mr. Meekins visited weekly and was always there for our family. He supported my grandmother, he helped provide and outlet and solace to my grandfather up until his very last day. I will always love and fondly remember Mr.Meekins and my only solace in learning of his passings is to envision the reception he must have received in heaven once created again by Mrs. Meekins and my grandparents- amongst many others. God speed, Mr. Meekins.
