Obituary of James I. Bass
James Inman Bass, Age 82 - Retired TSU Professor and Swimming Coach of the Tiger Sharks passed away from a lengthy illness on Sunday, January 2, 2022. He was at NHC Place at the Trace Rehabilitation Center at the time of his passing. “Coach Bass” as he was affectionately known touch the lives of many of his students and colleagues for decades.
He was a twice alumnus of Tennessee State University where he was a generous giver of his time and an unselfish donor to the TSU Foundation. He was also a lifetime member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated, where he became a member in the TSU Alpha Theta Chapter over 60 years ago. One of his last proud moments was participating with the Tiger Shark Reunion at last year’s Homecoming Celebration with some of his former swimmers.
He is survived by his loving wife and best friend of 56 years, Beverly Gilbert Bass. Three adult sons: Gilbert (Tusha), Jaman and Ian (Laura) all of Nashville, TN. Six Grandchildren: Jamiah, Bailey, Elijah, Eiman, Atticus, and Bodhi. Sisters: Vernice (Robert) Miller of Clarksville, TN; Pearline (James) Smith of Lexington, KY; and Ann (Frank) Gainey of Sumterville, FL. Brother: Charles Bass of Atlanta, GA. Sister in Law: Ophelia (James E.) Richards, Jr. of Poughkeepsie, NY. and a host of devoted nieces, nephews, friends and fraternity brothers He also had strong ties to the Dixon, Daniels, Leonard, Otey, Gates and Lewis families.
The service will be live streamed on Facebook@Lewis-Wright FD at 2:00pm on Saturday, January 15, 2022.
