There’s no way to truly prepare for the loss of someone you love. Renee Ewing Bowen, JD, a remarkable woman of intellect and warmth, was born on August 30, 1951, in Nashville, Tennessee. As the fourth of six children born to Thomas D. Ewing, Jr., and Martyna (Norris) Ewing, Renee was deeply rooted in family, community, and personal growth. On August 3, 2024, Renee passed away, leaving behind a legacy of love, learning, and strength.
Renee was a woman of quiet strength and deep thoughtfulness. She found her sense of peace and calm in her own way, often reflecting on life’s challenges with stubborn determination. She had a special place in her heart for Gordan Memorial United Methodist Church and made sure her daughters knew where she felt most comfortable with worship. She instilled in her daughters the importance of finding a place where they, too, could feel comfortable and supported. Renee worked privately on her spirituality, reading and studying the Bible, drawing from its wisdom to guide her through life's challenges. Renee had every earthly reason to be angry and cry, but instead she always tried to put her best face forward.
In 1974, Renee married James Donald Bowen, and together they were blessed with three beautiful daughters: Shannell Nicole, Kimberly Melissa, and Robbie Donzaleigh. Though life led Renee and James down separate paths, the love they shared for their children was unshakeable and everlasting.
Renee's journey of education and self-betterment began at Pearl Elementary School, continued at Washington Junior High School, and culminated with her graduation from the historic Pearl High School in 1969. Renee's thirst for knowledge was insatiable, and she went on to attend Tennessee State University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Psychology in 1973. Her quest for learning didn't stop there; in 1978, she earned an Associate Degree in Nursing from Belmont University and became a licensed Registered Nurse, and in 1989, she achieved her Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from the Nashville School of Law and was named a J.G. Lackey Law scholar. Her academic achievements were a testament to her dedication, intelligence, and passion for helping others.
Renee’s professional life was equally impressive. She was proudly employed at Meharry Hospital and Medical College for most of her career, where she made significant contributions. In her role as Director for the Infection Control Department, she worked tirelessly to ensure the safety and well-being of patients and staff. However, Renee's pride and joy were found in her work at the Office of the Dean, Medical College, where she served as the Clinical Liaison and Associate Dean in the School of Medicine. It was here that Dr. Bowen, JD., co-authored “On and Off the Playing Field; Ethics in Medicine,” a work that showcased her commitment to ethics and integrity in the medical profession.
Renee was involved in numerous professional and social organizations throughout her life. She was a past member of the American Nurses Association, Tennessee Nurses Association, Association for Professionals in Infection Control, Alpha Mu Gamma, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, and the National Coalition of Metropolitan Nashville Chapter of Black Women, Inc. all of which reflected her commitment to excellence and community service.
Outside of her professional life, Renee had a love for football that was both passionate and infectious. Whether hosting a watch party, traveling to see a game, or watching from home with her Mother and brother, Bubba, she was always the first to rally her family with the cheer, “It’s Football Time…TITAN UP!” Football was more than just a game to Renee; it was a way to connect with her loved ones and create lasting memories.
Renee, affectionately known as “Granny,” held a special place in her heart for her grandchildren, and they adored her in return. Her granddaughters loved her warm smile and playful spirit, while her grandsons cherished the time spent watching movies, sharing meals, and enjoying family gatherings. Renee was a devoted cheerleader at CJ’s high school football games and applauded Nicholas’s theater and music performances with pride. Her love for her grandchildren was deep and unconditional, and she made every effort to be present for the important moments in their lives.
Renee was preceded in death by her beloved daughter Robbie (Donzie) Donzaleigh Bowen and her father, Thomas Ewing, Jr. She leaves behind a family that will forever cherish her memory: her daughters, Shannell Nicole and Kimberly Melissa Bowen; her grandsons, Nicholas James Motley, Chrishanty (CJ) Shoantel Martin, Jr., and Robert (Cordell) Bowen; her granddaughters, Aleeah Donzaleigh Guinn and Jayme Renee Hubbard; her devoted mother, Martyna N. Ewing; her brothers, Thomas, Lanier (Mari) of Lithonia, GA, and Phillip (Angela) Ewing of Madison, AL; her sisters, Evelyn (Ollie Ray) Walker of Memphis, TN, and Kim (Alfonza) Hall; along with a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
