Dr. Kermit Rupert Brown

Nashville, TN

Departed this earth on Monday, February 17, 2014. He was born in Elizabeth City, North Carolina where he was a graduate of P.W. Moore High School followed by Hampton University in Hampton, VA, and Meharry Medical College in Nashville, TN. Furthermore, he completed a N.I.H. Fellowship in Cardiology at Indiana University School of Medicine. In August 1967 he entered into the U.S. Army where he attained the rank of Major and the National Defense Service Medal. He was honorably discharged in September 1969. He had an Internal Medicine practice in Elizabeth City, NC. He joined the faculty of Meharry Medical College in 1971 where he initially served as Associate Professor of Medicine and later as Professor of Medicine until 1995. In addition to duties at Meharry Medical College, he maintained a private practice in Internal Medicine and Cardiology in Nashville, TN for over 25 years. 

Dr. Kermit R. Brown was a member of First Baptist Church Capitol Hill; and his other memberships included Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, and the Association of Black Cardiologists. He also held a Fellowship in the American College of Cardiology.

He leaves behind to cherish his memories: daughter, P. Renee Obi, M.D., (Emmanuel Obi, M. D.); grandson, Olise Obi; nephew, Mark (Dwayna) Grant; very devoted cousins, Elaine Brown Murrell, Suzette Brown (Clensy) Roney, J. Ivan (Patricia) Brown, and W. Clinton (Andrea) Brown; a host of cousins; great nieces; great nephews; friends; former students; and colleagues.

Public viewing Monday, February 24, 2014 at Lewis & Wright Funeral Directors, 2-6 p.m. Visitation with family Tuesday, February 24, 2014, 11 a. m. - 12 p.m. with funeral to follow at First Baptist Church Capitol Hill, 625 Rosa L. Parks Blvd. Rev. Dr. Kelly Miller Smith, Jr., Officiating. Interment Mid Tenn Veterans Cemetery, Peagram, TN.
