Mrs. Joyce P. Shannon, daughter of the late Homer and Cardia Rutherford Payton of New Albany, MS, was preceded in death by both parents; a sister, Mrs. Hamer Shannon; and two brothers, O’Neal Payton and Herman Payton.
From an early age, Joyce expressed her belief and desire to trust in God and with that strong determination, she sat out to live a Christian life. She was a devoted member of Clark Memorial United Methodist Church where she served in various capacities, such as Treasurer of the Church for 27 years, member of the Committee on Finance, Church Council, United Methodist Women, Good Samaritan, Youth Ministry, and Communion Steward. Also, she was a recognized authority as a real estate broker, selling residential homes and managing rental properties. In addition, she was an avid player of games that tests a genre of knowledge and ingenuity.
Joyce was an exemplary student who studied at the University of Tennessee where she received the Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology. Being an accomplished psychologist, she comforted many in times of need. She was a problem solver and often took on many difficult tasks.
As a result of her generous spirit and pleasant personality, she was loved by many. Her Christian life was as beautiful as the flowers that she loved so well, and her influence will forever remain in the lives of all who knew her.
Joyce’s departure of this life on Tuesday, November 10, 2020, saddened the hearts of many. She leaves to cherish her memories: one sister, Dr. Marinelle Payton; one brother, Noverta Payton; sisters-in-laws, Mesdames Jessie M. Payton, Elizabeth Payton Rollins, and Mary Freeman; godchildren, nieces and nephews; a special cousin (Lula Jean Rhodes), and numerous relatives and friends.
She will be sadly missed by her family who loved her dearly and all of the lives with whom she touched.
