We are deeply saddened to inform you of the passing of Dr. Joseph Turner on August 7, 2024. Dr. Turner was the beloved husband of Mrs. Mabel Turner of 49 years. He was born on December 26, 1954, in Gary, Indiana and was a lifelong member of the African Methodist Episcopal Church beginning with his roots at First AME Church in Gary, Indiana. He is the son of Rev. Thomas and Mother Helen Turner who were both active in the AME Church. He attended Fisk University and served with distinction as a member of Wilberforce University Board of Trustees, and Payne Theological Board of Trustees. He received the Doctor of Humane Letters from Payne Theological Seminary in 2022, and Doctor of Humane Letters from Wilberforce University in 2024. An active member of Greater Bethel AME Church, he served in many capacities including a member of the Board of Stewards, and the Commission on Stewardship and Finance. His life in the 13th Episcopal District was also invaluable and sacrificial. He was President/1st Vice Chair of Believe, INC for many years where he provided financial grant assistances to AME Churches, Seminary Scholarships/Book Awards in the 13th Episcopal District. Dr. Turner was also the President of Universal Electronics, a successfully diverse telecommunications- Electrical and Low Voltage Design and installations Company. Dr. Turner lived a life of love to his family, excellence, and service to the Church and God’s people. His humor and joy will deeply be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. He leaves to celebrate his life, wife Mabel Turner, children, Jacqueline Turner-Charles and Steven Turner, grandchildren, Weston Charles, Thomas Turner, and Naomi Charles, brothers, Thomas Turner (Martha) and Dr. Arnold Turner (Sharon), a host of relatives, friends and other servants of God.
