James Edward Sublett, also known as “Big James,” was born on April 8th 1938 in Nashville, Tennessee. He lived a full vibrant life, helping anyone he crossed paths, but his biggest attribute was giving a huge smile to anyone he encountered. James, better known to his immediate family as “PaPa” was called to his heavenly home by our Lord and Savior on December 20th, 2024.
In Nashville, Tennessee he was the son of Ada Sublett. He was preceded in death by his mother and wife, Clara Jean Sublett also known as “Sweetheart.”
Growing up in the South Nashville area James was raised to be kind, loving and a dedicated servant for the Lord. These characteristics were taught to him by his family and his beloved church home Seay-Hubbard United Methodist Church where he acknowledged his love for Jesus Christ.
James attended Cameron High School and after graduating he became an employee with the State of Tennessee where he served faithfully for over 50 years and was recognized with numerous awards and achievements.
He would later meet and marry the love of his life Clara Sublett and cherish over 40 years of marriage. As a devoted husband he loved the addition of the Rodgers family, especially his daughter, Cheryl and grandson Le’Von. He adored spending countless hours with his family and loved gatherings.
James loved people and even loved riding the Metropolitan Transit Authority bus every day to work, encountering so many different individuals and building many friendships along his journey. He never met a stranger and loved being a ear to listen to or giving a good word to encourage someone.
Like many of his friends and family he kept a positive outlook on life and saw the best in people. He loved to laugh, joke, play cards and basketball with his friends and most importantly cheer someone who may have been feeling down with a huge smile and comforting words.
He leaves to remember him a loving and devoted daughter, Cheryl (James) Haynes; grandson, Le’Von (Sylyndar) Kendrick; son-in-law, Leverette Kendrick; brother-in-law, Marshall (Florida) Rodgers, a host of family and friends and the entire Seay-Hubbard United Methodist Church family. Please keep the Sublett family in your thoughts and prayers.
