Hayden E. Ballard, Jr.

September 25, 1942 — January 30, 2025

Hayden Eugene Ballard, Jr., affectionately known as "Hank," passed away peacefully on January 30, 2025, in Nashville, Tennessee, at the age of 82. Born on September 25, 1942, in Louisville, Kentucky, to the late Merrelene Ballard Dickerson and Hayden Eugene Ballard, Sr., he was the eldest grandchild, showered with love by his grandparents, aunts, and uncles. He was also a guiding force in the lives of his younger nephews, earning the title of "fun uncle" with his vibrant personality and boundless energy.

Raised in Louisville until the age of 11, Hank later moved to Bardstown, Kentucky, where he excelled both academically and athletically. He attended Bardstown High School, where he was a class parliamentarian, a varsity letterman in football and tennis, and the student manager of the basketball team. His pursuit of higher education led him to Tennessee State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree. While at TSU he received a U.S. Air Force ROTC scholarship, became a proud member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., participated in the university’s tennis and swim teams and was honored as "Mr. Kentucky”. His thirst for knowledge continued with a certificate in Public Administration from Harvard College.

A distinguished veteran, Hank’s career began in the U.S. Air Force, where he achieved the rank of Captain, and he and his beloved wife, Carlotta, experienced the joys of traveling and living abroad. After his military service, he embarked on a distinguished career in public administration and communications, working with Meharry Medical College Mental Health Center in Nashville, TN and later he worked in public administration for KIPDA in Louisville, KY. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to establish Ballard Communications, providing answering and paging services for physicians, as well as Ballard Travel, where he shared his passion for exploration with others. He also co-owned a restaurant in Nashville, adding to his diverse professional endeavors.

A devoted husband to Carlotta for 62 wonderful years, Hank was a proud and loving father to their daughters, Angela and the late Hillary. His devotion to family was unwavering, and he was known as a doting "OG" girl dad. His love for travel, sports, photography, and grilling—regardless of the weather—was legendary. Hank’s jovial nature and ability to befriend anyone earned him the nickname "The Mayor," as he truly never met a stranger. He also showed remarkable strength and resilience, overcoming numerous health challenges, including a heart transplant 23 years ago.

Hank leaves behind a loving legacy and is survived by his wife, Carlotta Laverne Ballard; daughter, Angela Lynn Ballard; sisters-in-law, Velma Otey (Inman-deceased), Joyace Peoples (Ronaldo-deceased), Sheila William, and Lillie Dennis (William "(Brunnie”-deceased)), and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Hillary Nicole Ballard, his parents, and siblings John Ballard, Edith Christy Stewart, and Robert Ballard.

Hank’s life was one of service, joy, and adventure, and he will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His warmth, wisdom, and unwavering love will forever remain in the hearts of those he touched.
