Emma Jewel Ewing Mitchem was the only child born to the late Ruth and George Ewing on February 3, 1935, in Nashville, TN. She transitioned to her eternal rest on December 17, 2024. Emma graduated from Pearl High School in 1953 and continued her education at the Mason School of Business where she excelled in typing and shorthand. She began here professional career at Genesco. Later she was hired to work at the Sunday School Publishing Board where she spent 25 years of her working tenure and met her husband of 59 years, the late Robert Lee Mitchem Sr. Together they had two children: Cheryl Lee Mitchem and Robert Lee Mitchem Jr. Emma was a tireless worker, and her resume continued to grow in 1987 when she started working for the United States Postal Service and concluded with a ten-year run typesetting employment ads for the Tennessean Newspaper, where she was awarded numerous times for excellence in layout and design. Emma was a professional at living life to the fullest. She loved flying, road trips, and taking cruises. She introduced many of her relatives to the love of travel and encouraged her family to go out and see the world. Growing up in Zion Baptist Church, Emma was baptized at an early age. Her love of the Lord, generous spirit, and numerous talents propelled her to as a member of the Voices of Zion and in the Lee Chapel AME Church Choir. Emma’s volunteerism spread to serving as a Flying Ace for the Nashville BNA Airport and using her culinary gifts to cook for her family, friends, and for numerous events. Her memory is survived by daughter Cheryl (German) Adams; son Robert (Dettra) Mitchem Jr; grandchildren, Erica and Evan Adams, Dionne and Robert Mitchem III, Diamond (Wade) Sharp; and great-grandson Rain Sharp.
