Edna Flozell Overall was born on April 28th,1942 in Mason, Tennessee to Nathaniel Maclin, Sr. and Gustava Whitmore Maclin. She was one of twelve children. Edna transitioned from this earth on September 2, 2024. She professed her love of Christ at an early age and began her Christian journey at Greenleaf Presbyterian Church, now known as Greenleaf Community Church, which she remained a lifelong member.
Edna was married to Arthur Overall in 1963 and had a daughter Yolanda Overall (Brown). She resided most of her adult life in Nashville, TN.
Edna graduated from Gaylor High School in 1960 and went on to pursue a Bachelor’s degree, in Health and Physical Education, at Tennessee State University. After college she pursued a career in education and had her longest tenure at Tennessee State University where she served in multiple positions. Edna was a legacy and served as the first head women's basketball coach. Throughout her career she educated and mentored students and was known as one of the stern but fair professors.
Throughout her 40 year career, she taught and mentored thousands of young men and women from all over the world. Her philosophy was always to maximize potential through effort and focus on the details. To all her friends, family and students her most famous advice was, “There is no right way to do wrong.”
Along with her passion to educate the upcoming generations. She was very involved as a philanthropist giving to multiple charities such as American Heart Association, American Cancer Society, American Red Cross, St Jude’s Hospital, NAACP, American Humane Society and Disabled American Veterans just to name a few.
Edna also loved sports. She often traveled to see her grandchildren participate in sports all year long for many years and Tennessee State University in various sports.
Edna was preceded in death by her parents, her siblings: Patricia Maclin, Viessa Bonds, Nathaniel Maclin Jr., Robert Maclin, James Maclin, Adrene Sparks,Theopolis Maclin, Laura Rice, Lawrence Maclin, Sr.
She leaves many to cherish her memory and continue her loving legacy, including her daughter Yolanda Overall Brown (Sterling) Nashville, Tennessee; four grandchildren Golden H. Tate, III (Elise), Wesley T. Tate, Breanna E.O. Tate, Deanna Y. O. Tate; five great grandchildren Londyn Marie Tate, Golden Tate IV, Isaiah Michael Tate, Breelyn Erin Ramsey Brooklyn Elia Ramsey; her sister Otha Pettigrew of Gary, Indiana and Chester Maclin, Sr. of Gary, Indiana, a host of nieces and nephews and extended family members. Edna may longer be earthbound, but her legacy of love joy and truth will live through family and friends.
